The first Post Office was at the McGill Ranch and was established on April 28, 1891. The first person appointed as Postmistress was Kate. L. McGill.
The office was located on the ranch property owned by her father Mr. William Neil McGill near the site which was later chosen for the Copper Company.
Work on the Copper Smelter was started in the fall of 1906. The name of the Post Office was changed to Smelter, Nevada on September 7, 1907. However, the name never became popular and was changed back again to McGill, Nevada on August 14, 1908.
The office was located on the east side of the Lincoln Highway until the need for more space made it necessary to move the office. At that time prohibition became the law of the land and the Copper Club had been shut down. That was how the post Office acquired its present location on the west side of the highway.
The Post Office was advanced to a third class office on October 1, 1908 after thirty years moving up to a second class then back to third according to the prosperity of the land. It was made a second class office in 1939 and has remained in that category to this date.
The interior of the Post Office was completely remodeled in July 1963, including new screen line with counters and boxes. The exterior of the building was renovated with new glass doors, canopy and sign for all to read:
